چکیده

[1] We report on detailed observations by the four Cluster spacecraft of magnetic reconnection and a Flux Transfer Event (FTE) at the magnetopause. We detect cold (eV) plasma at the magnetopause with two independent methods. We show that the cold ions can be essential for the electric field normal to the current sheet in the separatrix region at the edge of the FTE and for the associated acceleration of ions from the magnetosphere into the reconnection jet. The cold ions have small enough gyroradii to drift inside the limited separatrix region and the normal electric field can be balanced by this drift, E ≈ −v × B. The separatrix region also includes cold accelerated electrons, as part of the reconnection current circuit. Citation: André, M., A. Vaivads, Y. V. Khotyaintsev, T. Laitinen, H. Nilsson, G. Cluster observation of continuous reconnection at dayside magnetopause in the vicinity of cusp

In this paper, we present a case study of continuous reconnection at the dayside magnetopause observed by the Cluster spacecraft. On 1 April 2003, the four Cluster spacecraft experienced multiple encounters with the Earth’s dayside magnetopause under a fairly stable southwestward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Accelerated plasma flows, whose magnitude and direction are consistent with the...

Dynamics of Ganymede’s magnetopause: Intermittent reconnection under steady external conditions

[1] Magnetic reconnection at the terrestrial magnetopause is frequently intermittent, leading to the formation of localized reconnected flux bundles referred to as flux transfer events (FTEs). It remains unclear whether the intermittency of the process is intrinsic or arises because of fluctuations of solar wind properties. Here we use Ganymede’s magnetosphere, which is embedded in a background...

Diamagnetic Suppression of Component Magnetic Reconnection at the Magnetopause

We present particle-in-cell simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection in a system (like the magnetopause) with a large density asymmetry across the current layer. In the presence of an ambient component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the reconnection plane the gradient creates a diamagnetic drift that advects the X-line with the electron diamagnetic velocity. When the relative ...

Dependence of the depth of the Earth ’ s plasma depletion layer on the interplanetary magnetic field direction and the Alfvénic Mach number

The Earth’s magnetosheath, the transition region between the Earth’s magnetopause and the bow shock, is a space laboratory for the investigation of magnetoactive plasmas. Analogeous studies are also the aim of the LAPLAS experiment planned for the FAIR facility at GSI [1]. One of the recent problems of the magnetosheath physics is the dependence of its plasma depletion layer on the direction of...

Magnetic reconnection in a magnetosphere-accretion-disk system Axisymmetric stationary states and two-dimensional reconnection simulations

In the present paper we investigate the transport of accreting plasma across the magnetopause onto a strongly magnetized massive star (i.e. white dwarf or neutron star) by magnetic reconnection. A simplified axisymmetric magnetic field model of an aligned rotator is used to study the reconnection process. To be able to separate effects caused by instabilities of the system from intrinsic time-d...
